As most of you are aware, yesterday's meeting (10/30) was a career exploration, hosted by Martha Timberlake (Thank you, Martha!). Seeing as choosing a career starts out as a very broad process, Martha gave us the resources to narrow down a career choice.
An important aspect is to take into consideration your interests (not your skills, but your interests). It can be difficult because we all have the tendency to think about what we're good at, but as Martha put it, she is great at doing laundry. That is a skill that she has developed, but is that what she wants to do for a job? You may be skilled at something, but focus on what you're interested in. I personally thought that was a great starting point. Martha has a worksheet that provokes deeper thought into choosing the career path you want to start on, so if you would like a copy, I'm sure she has extras...
Another great resource is to visit http://www.cwidaho.myplan.com/. The website includes career assessments, college connections, answers to your questions, tools and calculators to help you decide which career is right for you, and a better understanding of the benefits and risks involved in choosing a career. Signing up is free, but you will need an access code, which you can probably obtain from a teacher, fellow classmate, or One Stop.
Two weeks from yesterday, will be part II of Career Exploration. It is on Friday, November 13 at 9:30am in room 218. And remember, the day after that, November 14, is Rake Up Boise. It's not too late to sign up, and you get a free t-shirt just for showing up (and participating)! Time and location is yet to be determined.
